The Weekly Read – Sept 12th

Selecting interesting articles, exciting news from the world of comics and pop culture, important editorials, or unique perspective pieces; LGN presents a weekly round up of links to read every Monday.

This week we have a NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, Thor & Darryl are bros 5ever, and Chanie Wenjack in Secret Path.

1. Katherine Johnson, the NASA Mathematician Who Advanced Human Rights with a Slide Rule and Pencil | Vanity Fair
“When Katherine began at NASA, she and her cohorts were known as “human computers,” and if you talk to her or read quotes from throughout her long career, you can see that precision, that humming mind, constantly at work. She is a human computer, indeed, but one with a quick wit, a quiet ambition, and a confidence in her talents that rose above her era and her surroundings.”

With the upcoming movie and book “Hidden Figures”, learn about a real figure behind the human computers of NASA.

2. What Fanfic Pairings Inspire The Steamiest “Ships”? | vocativ
“A new analysis from Witch Sandwich, a site that proudly boasts itself as “your source of nerdy fanfiction stats,” reveals which “ships” (imagined romantic relationships between fictional characters) are the smuttiest. The fanfiction deep dive is based on longform stories posted to Archive of Our Own in 2015. The fanworks site uses a rating system for fanfiction, broken down into General Audiences, Teen And Up Audiences, Mature, and Explicit: only suitable for adults.”

Two, two musician pairings. TWO!

3. This Stranger Things fan theory changes the game | AVClub
“The mythology of Stranger Things is laid out pretty simply, but there are still a lot of details missing. The Duffer brothers keep the mystery alive by not expounding on every single aspect of how the “Upside Down” works and the monster’s origins. Of course, the gaps in the mythology have led to a slew of fan theories. Some of them, like the idea that Barb could still be alive, hacking up slugs somewhere just like lil’ Will, are more like wishful thinking.”

Don’t read this if you haven’t finished Stranger Things.

4 . Chris Hemsworth’s Instagram Remains The Greatest With This Pic Of Tom Hiddleston | Buzzfeed
“He’s the greatest storyteller on Instagram.”

People forget, he’s a former improv’r.

5. Find Out How Thor Spent CIVIL WAR In This Hilarious Comic-Con Short | Birth. Death. Movies.
“That’s how I felt when I learned of Marvel’s Civil War: Team Thor comedy short shown in Hall H this year. And I’ve been carrying that FOMO with me ever since. Until today! Marvel has finally put the short online.”

It’s really great, just watch it. A great primer for anyone who is not familiar with Taika Waititi’s humour and directing.

6. New Gord Downie work devoted to First Nations boy who died running away from residential school | CBC
“A 12-year-old Ojibway boy who died from hunger and exposure after trying to find his way home from a residential school is the inspiration behind a new project from Gord Downie.

In 1966, Chanie (Charlie) Wenjack’s body was found by the railway tracks near Kenora, Ont.

It’s a story that so affected Tragically Hip lead singer Gord Downie, he created a solo album, a graphic novel and an animated film to honour Wenjack’s memory and educate other Canadians about the tragedy.”

Check out Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire’s Secret Path for pre-order information.
